House Legend Sharam Talks Music With An Edge, Deep Dish & Collaborations
By: Melissa Mallin

Where are you from and how did growing up in that area have an affect on the type of music you make?

I’m from the D.C. area, which is a very diverse cosmopolitan city. So, coming up, you sort of had to make a lot of people happy. I feel like it gave me flexibility to be able to weave my way through different kinds of music and make it seamless, which I think is one of the things that helped me grow out of where I came from.

When and how did you first become interested in music and how long have you been playing?

When I was a kid, I mean, at the time, I didn’t really know I was interested in music per say, but I remember I used to play the drums. Not in the traditional format, but tapping on buckets and stuff like that. I wanted a drum set, but I couldn’t get one so I used to record songs off of Betamax tapes onto tapes and give it to my school friends and stuff like that. I always knew I wanted to be around music somehow.

You currently co-own three labels, Deep Dish Records, Yoshitoshi Recordings and Shinichi Recordings. How did this come about and how do you balance the work of all three labels?

Well, Deep Dish Records is basically just something where only Deep Dish music comes out of it. We recently started working on some new stuff for that, so it doesn’t really take a whole lot of work. We haven’t really done anything on it for a while. Shinichi Recordings was dormant for a while, but we recently re-launched it again. Yoshitoshi has been sort of on going and going through different metamorphosis’s’ as the music industry changes. But, you know, we are sort of like the reliable ones since we’ve been there from the beginning and we try to keep focus on new up and coming artists. Our whole motto has always been on breaking new artists and releasing innovative music so, I’m happy to say that 20 years later, we’re still pumping it out.
