On the Broken Patterns EP, FRQ NCY proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is indeed the real deal. This offering is anything but derivative and showcases his prowess as a producer. FRQ NCY is an up-and-comer to defiantly keep an eye on.
The versatile bass artist drew early inspiration to write electronic music from the likes of Flume and Deadmau5 and later on from seeing acts like G Jones and Bassnectar play live. He’s well known for his expertise in sound design, mixdowns, and churning out tons of tracks in a short period of time. He delivers a uniquely heavy sinister sound with his songs.
Let’s dive right into the review.
The powerful, wub-filled title track sets the tone for the rest of the project. The build-ups and drops lead into one another seamlessly and are distinct enough that listeners are kept on their toes throughout.
“Love and Hate” is as grimey as it is beautiful. This juxtaposition of sound exemplifies the dynamic of love and hate.
“Pins and Needles” begins with an atmospheric opening section featuring commanding claps that lead us into a drop that throws listeners for a loop. FRQ NCY did a fantastic job of mixing and layering sounds on this track.
“Rubberband” makes me instantly feel like I was flung straight into outer space. There’s additionally some crazy sound design from start-to-finish. The confident basslines and swaggering drum patterns converge creating a sound similar to that of a dirty south hip-hop banger.
This Eprom-esque song is masterfully mixed and features frantic sound design. “Wyvern” stands out to me as the most zoned in and concise track on Broken Patterns EP. It is is a strong closer for the project.
