My story starts off like any fairytale should: I met a nice boy, with great hair, completely by accident. He was my knight in shining armor, constantly surprising me with flowers and fancy dinners and more snuggles than I knew what to do with. I could just tell we were something special. Slowly, little red flags started to appear. I told myself they proved how special our bond was and just brushed them off.  Nothing worth having is easy, right? Love is supposed to be a battle, isn’t it?

After a couple of months had passed, the game started falling away. Phone calls turned into belittling lectures, time together turned into screaming matches. When I was excited about applying for new jobs, he would tell me that I was wasting my time even trying and that I ought to just flip burgers at McDonald’s. He said that if I had any idea what the “real world” was like I would end up killing myself. For my birthday dinner, he took me to Steak n Shake, but only after locking me in his truck and screaming at me about how I made him want to hit me. I was constantly terrified, miserable, and depressed. I had been driven away from nearly all of my friends, and was too embarrassed to tell my family how I was allowing myself to be treated. The constant emotional and mental abuse eventually led me to something of a mental breakdown, and I had to start on aggressive antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications. The few hours a day I wasn’t sleeping were spent drinking and fluctuating between full-on ugly crying and fits of extreme, borderline uncontrollable rage. I felt like my life was out of control, like I was utterly destroyed. Worst of all, I could see no way out of the relationship.
