Music Made for the Booty by the Booty

By Melissa Mallin

How cool would it be if you could make music with your booty? Well, thanks to AIAIAI headphones, a versatile range of headphones aimed at people in need of quality sound at the club, in the studio, at home or on-the-go, it’s now possible. The project began as an experiment to give AIAIAI headphone users some new music in an unusual way and boy, did they deliver!

According to the Real Booty Music website, the project explores the rich heritage of bass-driven club culture where dancing and booty-shaking are integral elements. “We want to see if it’s possible to change the perception of twerking through placing it in a technology-driven, creative context and letting the dance do the talking,” said the Real Booty Music team. “So, we let the producer Branko from Buraka Som Sistema use the movement of buttocks to make a new track. In collaboration with The Omnipresent World Of Wizkids, a design company which focusses on superior design, technology and engineering, and utilizing Denmark’s leading booty-shaker, Twerk Queen Louise, as their instrument who contributes to the creative process, Branko ultimately produces a new track powered and shaped by the dancer’s booty movements.”

In order to do this, the team uses a device called “the booty drum,” which records movements through accelerometers attached to the dancers booty. The movements are then translated into unique velocities and triggers so that the dancer triggers the musicians samples, which ultimately create the beat or structure of the track. The end result is then a collaborative track between the dancer and the musician.
