Michael Calfan Adds Soul to EDM
By Melissa Mallin

Versatile French producer, Michael Calfan has been making music since he was just 15-years-old. Having quickly evolved from a rising star in the global dance scene to the protagonist of a fresh new sound, Calfan brings a new kind of specialty to dance floors. As the inventor of “Soul House,” Calfan creates dance music with a sensitive quality not only made to get bodies moving, but also to touch the audience’s hearts. With his love for different genres and finding inspiration in emotionally charged Pop, Folk and Soul music, Calfan consumes his love for different genres in order to produce a variation of styles. As a result, Calfan’s career is a remarkable excursion from heavy dance floor material to deep, compelling House tunes.

You’ve been making music since you were 15-years-old and your bio describes you as a “versatile producer who knows exactly what he wants.” Can you elaborate on what it is you want?

I’m like everyone. I’m changing myself and my tastes are changing. One day, I can like something and the other like something else. It’s the same when I’m producing music. I’m just doing what I love to do. Sometimes, I’ll produce a Deep House track one day and a Techno one the next.

How would you describe yourself? Do you define yourself based mainly on your intentions, your actions or something else?

We say, “You are what you listen to.” So, I’m probably what I produce.

Aside from music, what are some other things that are really important to you?

Peace, love and of course, friends and family.

You’ve produced heavy dance floor music and are referred to as “The father of Soul House” music. What were some of the motivating factors that made you want to transition into a whole new sub-genre of music and how do you feel about being known for that particular type of sound?

To be honest, I didn’t look for that. On Twitter, I noticed a few people started referring to my music, as “Soul House” and I loved it. Not for the genre “Soul,” but because I’m always trying to put some soul into my music. If people feel it, then I won.
