How Music Saved, Changed, and Transformed Bryan’s Life

PLUR Story
By: Bryan McGlynn (DJ Daz)

Growing up as a little kid, I was very active in sports, loved all types of music, played Nintendo, went to summer camps, etc. My coaches used to tease me by saying, “you are the All-American Athlete” when I was 8yrs old. In high school, I was defensive captain of the football team and captain of the lacrosse team. My hobbies were sports, lifting, and listening to all types of music. I always tried to be an overachiever, which got me in a lot of trouble in my mid to late 20s. Luckily, during that time, at an Atlantic City Club called Studio 6, I met a DJ who helped save my life through EDM. DJ Jason E burned me a live mix of what he spun that night (mostly house and hardstyle), which proved to be a much needed stress reliever. The following weekend, I bought turntables and started to spin dance music as a hobby.

For six months, this roller coaster continued down a bad path and, eventually, I had no clue where it was going. I lost my urge to do all activities and did not want to speak with people. The only thing that kept me going were my headphones, tables, and dance music. I spent an average of 5 hours a day listening to club beats in order to cope with my extremely stressful lifestyle.

In September 2011, I started feeling weird and decided to see a variety of doctors to figure out what was going on. My balance was completely off and I was hallucinating without any drugs in my system. Eventually, I completely lost touch with reality and ended up in the hospital. Once there, they found I had a severe manic episode and breakdown to the highest degree. The doctors told my parents I would most likely be brain dead from the trauma and that there was a very little chance for me to recover…
