Borgeous Riding The Wave

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got introduced to dance music?

My name is John Borger although I am better known by my DJ name Borgeous. I am originally from Miami and now live in Los Angeles. I have worked on music since I was 15 years old, starting more in the Hip Hop and Urban Beats area until I fell in love with dance music 8 years ago. It started off as something I just worked on for fun while I was promoting and DJing in Los Angeles. Last year, I decided to start focusing specifically on my production. I started putting out one or two free downloads every month. I did that for the first seven months. I finally did Tsunami, which was the first track I ever put out on a label and, next thing you know, I am here.

Who are your major musical influences?

I grew up listening to people like Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Metallica, and Pearl Jam. That’s what my dad always listened to, so I listened to a lot of rock. As I got older, I started listening to Hip Hop. Once I discovered dance music, some of my favorites have always been Dirty South, Tiesto, Kaskade, and Laidback Luke. I would say, in the dance world, those are my four favorites.

Does your music draw any of its inspiration from any of those artists?

Yeah, when you get in the studio, you try to do that, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that is the best practice. For me, I feel it is better to just go into the studio with a free mind and work off something in that present moment. To answer your question, though, I really like Benny Benassi’s approach on things or how Tiesto takes a really dramatic approach to some of his tracks. I think I may have subconsciously applied that to Tsunami, with that almost cinematic and dramatic buildup, almost like a movie.
